ISS Celebrations, News and Events
Check out our school news, celebrations and upcoming December Events:
Winter Concert:
The ISS Winter Concert will be on Thursday, December 15th at 1:30 and at 7:00. Students need to be in their homerooms by 6:40 that evening so that we can begin the evening concert on time. The concert will showcase what students have been working on in music class and will include singing, recorders, ukuleles, handchimes, xylophones and percussion. Students are working hard to prepare and are excited to perform for you!
Place Based Learning:
We continue to extend classroom learning into our community through "School as basecamp, community as classroom" model. Students are encouraged to pursue their natural curiosities connected to curricular content to provide meaning and relevance to their personal learning.
Our school has partnered with Teton Science School to continue to provide diverse and rich learning experiences for all students through place based education principles. This partnership is in place over the next 3 years through the generous funding provided by Suncor Energy.
Archery Program:
The first round of our ISS after-school Archery Program has completed. Special thanks to seed-funding from Alberta Conservation Association and Alberta Health Services grants. This money was used to purchase archery equipment and provide honorariums for guest speakers to share their knowledge with students. Joel Gamache attending one of the after school sessions to speak about his Metis upbringing and respectful practices for hunting. He also helped coach the students. The learning and skill development has been rewarding for those grade 6 students who participated in this first session. Our second round of archery programming will be offered to students following the holiday break.
Student Leadership at ISS:
Congratulations to all candidates who ran for elected positions and to those students who are in official roles from the recent Student Council Elections. All students are leaders at ISS and help to build and promote a strong, connected school culture to "learn, play and be well together". We look forward to the leadership and school spirit that this commited group of students will bring to our school!
Skating and Curling:
As part of our physical education programming, all students will skate and curl at the Coleman Sportsplex in December. Thank you to the Senior's Curling Club who will be providing curling instruction for students. Watch for further information and permission forms coming home in early December.
